Mercer Jail Release Destinations
The Mercer County Sheriff's Office operates the county jail for local pretrial custody and county sentences. A community release can follow a Mercer court order, satisfaction of a county term, or another lawful release authority. The jail's final movement entry should identify the date, time, type, and destination when recorded. The court docket explains the legal reason, but it may not show the moment staff completed physical processing.
Other exits continue custody. A commitment to the Illinois Department of Corrections sends the person into state custody. The sheriff also reports holding Cook County prisoners and federal prisoners in transit or awaiting trial. Those people may leave Aledo for another county, the U.S. Marshals Service, or BOP-related custody. A transfer line must not be relabeled as release to the community.

The sheriff accepts written requests at mcso@frontiernet.net, fax 309-582-5158, or Office of Sheriff at the jail address. The office processes records it holds and may not forward a request sent to the wrong public body.
A focused request should identify the person, booking date or range, and booking number when known. Ask for the existing booking/release record, release or transfer date and time, release authority or type, receiving agency or destination, and booking photograph as a separate item. Prefer electronic copies. Ask the office to redact exempt details and release the rest, and request a fee estimate before chargeable work.
Mercer Jail Capacity History
The official Mercer County Jail information page says the building opened in 1989 with 30 beds. A later 72-bed addition brought stated capacity to 102. IDOC's 2021 inspection identified a 2011 renovation and described 90 male and 12 female rated spaces. The newer 2024 inspection still reported rated capacity of 102 and a point-in-time population of 39 on March 5, 2024.
The inspection count is not a current population, annual booking total, or release volume. No official source in the research supplies annual releases, average stay, or turnover. The stable capacity facts help identify the facility, but they should not be used to estimate who left on a given date.

Mercer Jail Transfer Records
Mercer's acceptance of USMS and other Illinois or Iowa county detainees makes the committing authority crucial. A person physically housed in Aledo may have no Mercer criminal case. Ask the jail which agency committed the person and which agency received them. The building alone does not identify the final custodian.
A federal pretrial defendant may leave Mercer with the U.S. Marshals Service and not yet appear in the BOP locator. USMS has no broad public historical locator like BOP. Use the federal detention or release order and ask Mercer for the receiving agency. For a sentenced federal person, the BOP inmate locator can show location or a release notation. “Released” or “Not in BOP custody” proves only the end of BOP custody; court-ordered supervised release or another agency can follow.
No ICE detention facility or Mercer-specific ICE contract was verified. A particular transfer to ICE can still occur without such a contract. If the jail movement line names ICE, search the ICE locator and preserve the Mercer transfer as a separate event. Do not translate the generic word “federal” into ICE.
Mercer Jail Release Logistics
No official source supplies standard release hours, an exit door, a family waiting area, weekend timing, a property-return procedure, identity-document help, gate money, or reliable public transportation. Call before arranging pickup. Ask only for current procedures and safe pickup directions. The blank or stale county transportation page does not support a promise that a bus serves the jail.
The sheriff page still posts a $42 “bonding fee” and describes JailATM remote bonds and in-person bail. Illinois began statewide nonmonetary pretrial release on September 18, 2023. That older wording should not be treated as a general current cash-bail schedule. Ask the jail or court whether the charge concerns a legally permitted category or older obligation. Court-ordered pretrial release, sentence completion, and a permitted bond category are different events.
Illinois law allows specified deductions from a county jail account and provides for the remaining commissary balance after sentence completion to be mailed to the last known address. The research does not establish Mercer's exact property or account workflow. Confirm the mailing address and current process directly rather than assuming funds are handed over at the exit.
Visiting After Mercer Release
The sheriff posts an unusual rule: a person released from jail custody during the prior six months may not visit a current inmate. This restriction can affect family members or peers soon after a Mercer County Jail release. It does not mean the released visitor remains in custody or under supervision.
Before planning a visit, check the current rule with the jail and give the prior release date. A person's probation, parole, or MSR terms may impose separate contact limits, but those must come from the controlling order or supervising agency. The jail visiting restriction should not be expanded into a claim about every released person's legal status.
